Jessica's morning must-haves?

Herbivore Botanicals Lapis Oil and our Carrot & Chia smoothie!

Smoothies are somewhat of a ‘chameleon food’-- they can comfortably slip into any time of day for different reasons. They can serve as a reliable sidekick for a fulfilling breakfast, mid-afternoon treat, or even a flavorful dessert-- but no matter what craving your satisfying, shouldn’t they give you a bonus nutritional boost, too? Our friends at Daily Harvest have created specialty smoothies that are not only unique in ingredients and taste, but their own specific strengths, from immunity to detoxing, and we figured at least one curated recipe would focus on nourishing our largest organ (you know, skin). We reached out to Jessica Young, the masterful Chef & Head of Product at Daily Harvest, to ask what their favorite skin-boosting smoothie would be.

Young new just the smoothie for us-- the Carrot + Chia, or as they like to call it-- the ultimate glow-boosting smoothie! “The Carrot + Chia It’s my favorite-- it actually tastes like liquid carrot cake,” Young told us. “If you blend it with almond milk and a bit of coconut oil for added healthy fats, it can help make you glow to the max.”

Young told us that her morning skincare routine always includes her smoothie. Her bathroom vanity in morning displays the Carrot + Chia with the Herbivore Botanicals Lapis oil, keeping her feeling bright and glowy all day.

So why is the Carrot + Chia the ultimate skincare smoothie? Young breaks it down by ingredient, which includes carrot, sweet potato, date,  raw walnut, ginger, chia, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla bean.

“Chia seeds deliver massive nutritional value! It’s packed with omega-3s, dietary fiber, free-radical fighting antioxidants which do wonders for your skin's glow factor,” Young told us. “Raw walnuts are a rich source of fiber, magnesium and unsaturated fat (particularly omega-3s), walnuts are also rich in B vitamins and antioxidants, which protect skin from free radical damage. Carrots are rich in beta carotene for anti-aging and healthy vision, as well as vitamin A, which assists the body in internal cleaning and promotes gorgeous, glowing skin. And cinnamon isn’t just for a flavorful kick--it’s known to reduce inflammation and redness.”

Daily Harvest smoothies are delivered frozen and directly-to-your door. When I spoke to founder Rachel Drori, we chatted about the benefits of frozen fruits and vegetables and how they contain their nutritional value. “Farm-freezing our produce is our secret sauce because the produce is picked at its nutritional peak, whereas stuff in the grocery store is picked before it’s actually ripe and sits on trucks for weeks on its way to the store while it's nutrient content is degrading,” she said.

Smoothies may be a chameleon food, but with the Carrot and Chia smoothie, you won’t be able to hide your glow! You can check out the rest of the DH menu on their website, and read our interview with Rachel Drori here.
