How did the Motley come to be? Was there an initial idea or did it build over time?
We launched The Motley in 2010, back when there wasn’t much of a conversation about men’s grooming as an industry. Most people told us we were trying to sell men something they would never want, but we saw a gender void in beauty, and as men’s fashion became more refined, we knew grooming would follow. The idea to start an e-tailer of superior men’s grooming was Matt’s. He personally was searching for higher quality, more sophisticated skincare and hair options and found that while a few small men's brands existed, they were hard to find. We both saw the opportunity to bring those brands under one online roof, educate men about their skin and supply the best products out there.
Madison, you started the Motley with your brother Matthew. What is it like to be siblings and cofounders? Has it created a new dynamic?
Growing up, I don’t think either of us ever expected to end up working together, but I’m glad it happened that way. I think that working with a sibling, you have the unique ability of already knowing their strengths and weaknesses and how they work best. You also have trust built into your business relationship. We do spend more time together than most siblings. We work together, live in the same building, and have an overlapping social circle. The downside is that there’s no separation now between work and family life. There are definitely times when we both should really turn off and just enjoy our time with friends and family, but we just can't help talking shop when we’re together.
What would you say to a man who wants to be more conscious of grooming but doesn’t quite know where to start?
Don’t be intimidated! If you’re not sure where to start, chat with one of us at The Motley or to a Skin Therapist at Heyday to help set you up with the right routine for your skincare needs. That’s what we’re here for! At the very least, get yourself a gentle cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight or dry and always follow up with a moisturizer. Healthy, youthful skin starts with hydration, so even if you think your skin is oily, don’t skip that step!
Do you find any social stigmas embedded into men's grooming and self care?
A lot has changed since we started The Motley seven years ago. Back then, men didn’t talk about grooming or see it as masculine to care about their appearance. Now men are starting to embrace grooming as a necessary step in taking care of themselves. It’s not a beauty thing, it’s a self-care thing. Most men now understand that putting some thought into their style and self care actually makes them seem more confident and put together overall.
What is one of your favorite products currently on the Motley shelves?
I’m personally obsessed with the Buckler’s Revitalize Face Oil. I try to keep all of my skincare and makeup as natural as possible and this face oil blend is super clean and loaded with antioxidants. A face oil absorbs into the skin even better than a cream or lotion, and using this oil has made my skin look and feel so much healthier, brighter, and clearer. Keeping my skin well hydrated has definitely reduced breakouts from occurring, and I’m hoping will keep my skin wrinkle-free in the longer term.
What is your personal favorite skincare trick or tip?
I like to use a little of the Buckler’s Chapped Lip Remedy (the tube version) on my cuticles! My hands get super dry and the Lip Remedy hydrates and smooths just like a cuticle oil would
